Winter is coming and we are sure you have no wish to become a White Walker. Unfortunately, you are likely to experience an above scenario if your home’s furnace is out of order. This appliance is essential to your overall comfort in winter. If you have infants or an older family member, it’s also essential for their overall health. So when your furnace won’t stay lit (especially during the night), it’s easy to bypass any feelings of serenity and go straight to panic mode. Don’t fret just yet. A furnace that won’t stay lit isn’t entirely uncommon — and there are quick and easy steps you can take to figure out why your system is experiencing trouble. Below are the most common reasons your furnace won’t stay lit. A thermocouple is a safety component that uses two different types of metal wire to measure the temperature of the flame. This is so it can manage the gas flow to the burner. When the thermocouple senses that the flame isn’t hot enough, it shuts off the flow of gas so that your home isn’t filled with flammable gas. If the thermocouple malfunctions, it can incorrectly shut off the gas, which your furnace won’t stay lit. A pressure switch is another safety device, mostly on newer systems, that will shut your system down if it detects the venting in your system isn’t operating correctly. Improper venting can be caused by dirty air filters, blockages or obstructions in the ductwork, or blocked registers. If all the above options are not the issue, then there may be a problem with the circuit board inside the furnace. A qualified technician should check the furnace as it is unsafe for homeowners to perform this task. Many circuit boards have an LED code that flashes during a furnace malfunction. Typically, it can be viewed through a sight glass about the size of a quarter on the lower door of the furnace. The code should give indications of what is causing the furnace to lock out and not heat your home. We're more than happy to come out and diagnose the problem. Just get in touch! If you're looking to prevent potential equipment failure (a smart move), our service agreements include an annual furnace or heat pump inspection.
