When your GE dryer doesn’t spin nor heat, be ready to replace many defective parts. This type of a breakdown the owners are able to repair themselves under the condition they have all necessary parts and tools. Firstly, check the following below parts for a failure. Start with a drive belt. A worn, slipped, or broken drive belt creates a distinctive problem: the dryer motor will be humming as usual, but the drum won't turn. Drive belt problems are also the most common reason a dryer won't spin. Try to turn the drum with your hand. If your belt is intact, the drum won't move easily. If it has slipped or snapped, the drum will move fairly freely. Changing the belt takes a little DIY expertise because you'll have to remove panels to access it, and work around other components that may be in the way. Then check a pulley belt drive. The dryer belt goes around the outside of the drum and is looped onto a drive pulley attached to the dryer motor shaft which drives the belt, and around an idler pulley which applies tension to the belt. This tension is what causes the belt to grip the outside of the drum in order to rotate it. If the drum is overloaded, or if a drum roller, glide, bearing, or pulley fails, the belt may begin to slip. Over time, the belt can fray and, eventually, break. When the belt breaks, you may still hear the motor running, but the drum will not rotate. On some dryer models, a broken belt will activate a belt switch that will prevent the motor from running. The drum bearing will also need a diagnostic. Over time, this bearing wears out. If the drum bearing is worn out, the dryer may not turn properly. To determine if the drum bearing is at fault, remove the dryer belt and try turning the drum by hand. If the drum rotates freely, the drum bearing is not likely worn out. If the drum makes squealing or grinding sounds when turned and/or is hard to turn, check the drum bearing and replace it if necessary. Contact a professional maintenance helper to track and replace malfunctioning parts.
