GE ovens are respected for nice functioning and minor cases of breakdowns. Homeowners use ovens quite often so this appliance should be in working condition all the time. As a rule, an oven fan is less immune to malfunctioning. The cooling fan is not visible, but you will hear it running whenever the electronics get hot and turn off when the electronics are cool. Either the oven or the cooktop can create enough heat for the cooling fan to come on. The cooling fan is designed to keep the area between the cavity and the outer casing cool. It is a cylindrical fan and is operated by a Thermal Switch automatically depending on the temperature. As the temperature rises it causes a bi metallic strip inside the TOC to turn the cooling fan on. As the temperature cools the bi metallic strip breaks the contact which turns the cooling fan off. When you finish cooking and turn the oven thermostat off, the cooling fan motor should (depending on temperature) still be running and will run for 10 minutes or so until the oven has cooled down sufficiently. The fans are not completely silent, but they are generally quiet. If a fan is making an abnormal sound (such as squealing, grinding, or squeaking, especially when it stops or starts), it is better to check it ASAP to make sure nothing bad is going on. A quick reaction is able to prevent an expensive service. Arrange a diagnostic appointment on the regular basis (every six months) and be sure in the normal work of your unit.
