Before you start suspecting spark ignition switch and harness for a breakdown, check if the control lockout feature hasn’t been activated. When power is first supplied to the appliance, or if the appliance loses power, the surface burners will be in the Control Lockout position. The surface burners cannot be activated until power is restored to the appliance and the Control Lockout is disengaged. The Control Lockout controls unintended use of the oven control (certain models) and surface burners. When the control is locked out, the surface burners cannot be turned on by the control knobs. “Locked” will be on the display. Check to see if the appliance is connected to the gas supply and the gas shutoff is turned on. If you are not connected to gas, have a qualified gas technician connect the appliance to gas. The igniter will only spark to ignite the gas when the knob is aligned to the Ignite position. You may have moisture in the burner ports from cleaning or a spill. Either allow it to dry or clean according to your Owner's Manual. You can speed up the drying time by blowing cool air from a hair dryer on the area. Remember to clean gas burners from food debris regularly. Begin by removing the grate covering the troubled burner. Next, remove the burner cap, which should lift off with ease. The sealed burner base will either lift off or you may need to remove a couple screws before removing it. Clean the surrounding area with a warm, soapy washcloth. Soak the sealed burner base in vinegar or warm water and use a stiff brush to remove any debris. Finally, clean any remaining debris out of the burner holes with a toothpick, sewing needle or compressed air. Reinstall the burner, cover and the grill, and try igniting the burner once more. If this doesn't work or you are still doubtful about the way of functioning, you may want to consult a professional repair technician and get a more thorough diagnostic of your KitchenAid cooktop.
