Unusual grinding sound in your GE washer must alert the owner. Most likely, it is a minor breakdown and you will eliminate the issue easily. The main tub bearing has multiple tiny metal balls within a circular frame. The balls ride in a track as the washer spins. When the tub bearing begins to breakdown the balls frequently fall from their housing. As the bearing breaks down and loses it's internal metal balls it begins to make a noise. A broken belt or pulley might cause the sound as well. The tub on your GE washer spins thanks to a motor that turns using a drive belt and pulley system. These parts can fail quickly if the washer is constantly being overloaded or becoming unbalanced. To inspect them, you’ll need to access the inside of the washer cabinet. Don’t forget to inspect the clutch assembly in your washer. The washer’s clutch assembly engages the transmission with the inner tub during a spin cycle. It helps the tub spin at the proper speed. Continued overloading puts stress on the clutch assembly, leading to the GE washer being loud when spinning. Replace the worn out clutch assembly if needed when your washing machine makes loud noise when spinning. You’ll find the clutch assembly beneath the wash tub.
