Is your Rheem furnace blowing cold air? Your thermostat has an ON and AUTO switch that runs your blower. If the switch is in the ON position, then the blower keeps running, even when the furnace is not heating. As soon as the furnace cycles back on the air will warm up again. All you have to do is switch the thermostat to the AUTO position. Then, the blower only comes on when the furnace heats. Sounds like it could be a dirty or bad flame sensor. When the burner lights, there is a flame sensor in the flame and it is supposed to sense the flame and send a signal back to the control board which will keep the gas valve open, if it gets dirty or is bad it doesn't send the signal back to the board and the board will shut the gas valve off and after three tries it will lock out the furnace and you have to reset it to get it to work again. The flame sensor looks like a wire and it's in the flame usually it will get gas deposits on it, then it won't work. You can clean this sensor with an extra fine piece of steel wool, but before you attempt to do this disconnect all power to the furnace. If you can’t get your furnace to blow any air, hot or cold, it’s possible it has overheated. Safeguards are in place that shut off the burners when the unit gets too hot. More often than not, the problem is a dirty air filter. Furnace filters should be checked frequently for dirt and debris. If you have pets you may find that you have to change out your filter as often as once a month. Once the air flow is no longer restricted and the unit cools down, the furnace should start blowing warm air. The dirty air filter blocks airflow over the furnace’s heat exchanger, causing it to overheat. When overheating, your furnace can trip a high limit switch, causing the furnace burners to shut off so that the heat exchanger does not crack. Turn off your furnace at the thermostat, and check the furnace filter. If it’s dirty, change it. You may need to call a technician to help you reset the furnace. If you’re not able to get the problem resolved with the above troubleshooting tips, have an experienced HVAC professional investigate further to identify the cause. Even if you are successful, it may be wise to upgrade from an older sensor or filter to a new model, to avert future problems.
